I produced and performed the soundscore for DECOLABIA bY HIJACK. This piece was nominated for a SAGE "Outstanding Ensemble" award.
How does Farstad's treatment of the words and performance inform the dance?
KVL: We’re having sound come from the Utopian Podium, but once you’re speaking there’s this hierarchy that gets set up – almost like the words are the real communication and the dance is just illustrating.
Here, it helps that the music, sound, the lyrics are made of the same material as the dance – they’re being made together.
A: It also helps that they are as abstract as one another.Lyrics will often be used as a frame through which to view the movement because they are literal or understandable.The way the Katelyn is working with these words they are as abstract as the dance. It becomes rhythmic rather than meaningful.
